Leisure Battery Storage

Correct leisure battery storage is an important part of looking after your battery. Unlike other batteries, leisure batteries are quite often used for only part of the year. Most people take part in leisure time activities such as camping and boating during warm weather months much more often than during colder months. This means that a good percentage of leisure batteries spend at least a few months in storage.

Why battery storage matters:

  • Storing a leisure battery improperly can ruin your battery over time or at least shorten its life.
  • Knowing how to store your leisure battery properly can help ensure that you get the most life out of your leisure battery possible and therefore save you money.
  • Correct battery storage will ensure that your battery doesn’t let you down when you are out on the water or camping.

Here are some tips for leisure battery storage.

Leisure Battery storage tip: Store your battery clean

It is always a good idea to clean as much dirt as possible from your leisure battery as this will help ensure that your battery terminals do not corrode during the months of storage. Wiping your battery off with a slightly damp cloth before storing can help keep your battery ready to use when warm weather comes once again.

Battery storage tip: Ensure Leisure battery is fully charged before storing

Always make sure that your battery is fully charged before storing it. If your leisure battery is a wet cell battery also check the water level and make sure it is filled before charging the battery up for storage.

Battery storage tip: Store Leisure battery in a dry, well ventilated place

Battery storage shouldn’t take place in a damp basement or a small unventilated cabinet. Make sure that during the time your battery is stored it both keeps dry and has proper ventilation.

Leisure Battery storage tip: Store it in a cool, not cold, place

A battery's life expectancy can be seriously affected by either extreme heat or extreme cold. So make sure when you store your battery it is in a cool but not cold place. Your battery should never be left in below freezing temperatures for long periods of time. Neither should it be stored in areas that are too warm nor have high humidity levels.

Battery storage tip: Check stored Leisure battery periodically and keep it charged

Check your battery every so often and give it a trickle charge about once a month to keep it fully charged. Better yet, if possible, during the period that your battery is being stored place it back in your camper, run its cycle and then recharge it. Using a stored leisure battery periodically or at least keeping it fully charged will help it to maximise its life expectancy.

Leisure batteries are usually good for at least two years. However, the life of your battery depends a great deal on how well you maintain it both while you are using it and when you store it. If you want your leisure battery to run for its entire projected life then proper battery storage is important.

As well as supplying leisure batteries, Pb Batteries also provides battery storage equipment to help keep them in tip top condition.
