AGM Battery Introduction

The AGM battery was first developed in California in the 1980’s. They are VRL batteries and the expansion of AGM is Absorbed Glass Mat.

These batteries are easy to maintain and handle. They are normally used in motor bikes and higher end vehicles like BMW and premium sports cars, as well as in marine applications. Here are a few advantages of using AGM batteries:

  • An AGM battery is easy to handle as the electrolytes inside won’t spill out even if you turn it upside down
  • It doesn’t require watering. This makes it perfect for use in conditions where it is difficult to get hold of water.
  • The product won’t let out any gas while charging. This means you don’t have to make sure that the charging area is well ventilated
  • It can withstand low temperatures without freezing or cracking
  • The product is vibration resistant due to its sandwich construction

AGM batteries also have a number of disadvantages. They are costly and hence not ideal for everyday usage. The battery can be discharged only up to 50% while lead acid once can be discharged up to 80%. Like any other battery, overcharging can reduce the capacity of an AGM battery.

This type of battery is widely used in marine applications. It is used as a starter cell and as a deep cycle battery.
